FRIDLEY CUSTOM HOMES ORGANIC MODERN
THE STory
From the very beginning, this home felt like a story the Lord had been writing long before we ever put pencil to paper.
Years ago, when we were newlyweds ourselves, we lived next door to the sweetest couple—he was our friendly bachelor neighbor at the time, and before long, he was a newlywed too. Life has a beautiful way of weaving stories together like that. Fast forward to our 2018 Tour Home open house, and there they were again—no longer just old neighbors, but familiar faces stepping back into our lives in the sweetest, most full-circle way.
When they reached out to share they were ready to build their dream home, we were beyond honored. There’s something so special about walking alongside people in different seasons of life—watching their story grow, and getting to help create a place where the next chapters will unfold.
Their property was wonderfully untamed, the kind of land that makes you pause and imagine what could be. It felt like an adventure from the very start. And their vision was thoughtful and elevated, yet grounded in warmth. Every detail mattered, but not in a fussy way—in a way that invited people in. The kind of home that encourages you to slow down, gather close, and stay awhile.
Designing our 2023 Tour Home with them was such a joy. Every beam, every layered texture, every window placed to frame those glorious views—it all felt intentional and full of heart. Being able to open the doors and share it with our in-person community for a week-long tour was the sweetest celebration.
What makes 2023 even more meaningful is that it wasn’t just the year this home came to life—it was also a year of incredible milestones for our family. Watching Nolan be named the Home Builder’s Association “Builder of the Year” was such a humbling honor. His steady dedication, integrity, quiet leadership and love for craftsmanship have always been the foundation of what we build, and watching him be recognized felt deeply meaningful—not just professionally, but personally.
There’s something poetic about it all—while Nolan was being celebrated for the homes he’s built over the years, this one was rising from the ground up. Hard work and heartfelt vision unfolding at the same time.
2023 will always hold a special place in our hearts. It was a year of gratitude, of late nights and big dreams, of celebrating how far we’ve come and stepping faithfully into what’s ahead. And every time we walk through this home, we’re reminded that it was never just about the recognition or even the design itself. It’s about legacy. It’s about people. It’s about creating spaces where life happens and memories are made.
Because at the end of the day, homes like this remind us why we do what we do: it’s never just about the house. It’s about the people, the memories, and the beauty of coming home.
The Style
When we started dreaming up the design direction for this home, the phrase Organic Modern kept rising to the surface. To us, it meant layering materials that feel beautifully imperfect—pieces that carry texture, movement, and a little bit of soul. Zellige tile with its uneven edges, exposed glue-laminated beams, and honed natural Calacatta Gold marble brought that raw, grounded character into the space. Then we balanced it all with crisp black windows, a tailored cast stone fireplace, and minimal lighting that felt clean and intentional. It’s that tension between refined and relaxed that makes a home feel both elevated and welcoming.

Living Room
The living room really embodies that balance. A custom cast stone fireplace surround anchors the space, flanked by built-in cabinetry that blends style and function in the most seamless way. We layered two striped rugs in the softest cloud-like pile to create a generous footprint for the furniture—because comfort should never feel like an afterthought. It’s the kind of room that invites you to sink in, exhale, and stay awhile.
The Kitchen
In the kitchen, we leaned into contrast. A rich espresso-stained island grounds the room against the warmth of the white oak floors. Full-height zellige tile rising above an 18-inch marble splash with a ledge quickly became one of our favorite details—it feels handcrafted and timeless all at once. Panel-ready fridge and freezer help everything fade quietly into the background, while the creamy cabinetry painted in Farrow & Ball’s “Drop Cloth” pairs beautifully with antique gold accents that bring in that lived-in, organic patina. And the pantry? Black-and-white checkerboard tile, endless storage, and easy snack access for the kids—because a beautiful home still has to work for real life.
Bedrooms
The primary suite feels like a retreat in every sense. Sweeping valley views from the private patio set the tone, and the bathroom became an instant favorite during the tour. The wet-room style double shower that transforms into a spa-like tub enclosure feels luxurious but still deeply connected to the home’s natural palette. It’s calm, restorative, and quietly stunning.
The secondary bedrooms were such a joy to design. We layered color and pattern in ways that still felt cohesive with the home’s neutral foundation. A Jack-and-Jill bath showcases soft blue picket tile, while the nearby en-suite shower wraps in a rich, deep green. Wallpaper and bedding were our chance to sprinkle in personality and whimsy—letting each child’s style shine in a way that feels playful but still thoughtfully curated.
Utility
Even the laundry room got its moment. Taupe cabinetry paired with a soapstone-look quartz and black marble floor tile proves that hardworking spaces can still be beautiful. It flows into a deep, moody mudroom that leads effortlessly to the garage and backyard. We used a cement tile that is both durable and whimsical and another nod to the perfectly imperfect finish materials. With kids and a dog in the country, a mudroom isn’t just nice to have—it’s essential. It’s one of those unsung heroes that keeps the rest of the home feeling calm.
Down the long hallway, you’ll find easy access to the upstairs bonus room and a cozy media space just off the main living areas. Framed by double barn doors, it’s the perfect hangout—close enough to feel connected, but tucked away enough for noise of wrestling matches and dance parties. We love imagining how this room will evolve as the kids grow. We mixed some special order furniture with this deep, bench, navy sofa from Crate & Barrel.
Pop-Up Shop
And one of the most fun moments? Hosting our third pop-up shop right in the garage. There’s something so special about walking through a home filled with inspiration and then leaving with a little piece of it to style in your own space—or maybe restyle, because inspiration has a way of sparking something new the moment you get home.
